Our Appalachian GEAR UP team recognizes the many challenges and high level of uncertainty being faced across the country. In an effort to further support our community of schools, we are working with Digital Promise to bring virtual academic growth opportunities to western North Carolina. We feel that a virtual professional learning model is needed and valued in the face of the growing dependency on digital classrooms as dedicated professional development days, substitutes and teacher renewal credits may be difficult to access as we transition into a blended-virtual school environment for the 2020-21 school year. Our participants have access to a series of Professional Learning Pathways, each curated to address the growing needs of educators in the new era of distance education, as well as scheduled synchronous virtual coaching sessions to provide guidance, observations or a thought partner.
The RootED program is a partnership between Appalachian GEAR UP and Constructive Learning Design striving to connect students and educators in western North Carolina with community partners to address and solve authentic, local challenges. This program engages students to apply experiences gained from postsecondary education back into their home regions and communities.
As our schools work through the evolving pandemic, changes in state educational policy and challenges of teaching remotely, we recognize that it can be an overwhelming task to research, learn and implement the new tools required for distance education. Below is a curated list of resources for educators to help them navigate the stream of apps, and web 2.0 tools with some of the simplest and most accessible tools available to tackle the various tasks of distance learning. Please feel free to share and distribute this document accordingly.
