GEAR UP students from East Burke Middle School competed and won 3rd place at the NC Google Gravity Games held in Lenoir this past April. Students from Watauga County and Wilkes County also participated in the event.
Students from the winning EBMS school include Kaleb Castle (driver), Eli Carico (car builder), Raleigh Slutsky (car builder), and Andrea Gladden (faculty advisor).
Every year, middle and high school teams from across the state compete in colorful gravity-powered cars they’ve designed and built themselves. The NC Gravity Games are an educational, hands-on activity designed to get young people excited about science and are part of the NC Science Festival. The NC Gravity Games are sponsored by Google, Appalachian State University, and the City of Lenoir.
The GEAR UP Gravity Games coordinator, Jonathan Carpenter states "This is the 5th year GEAR UP has participated in the annual Gravity Games in partnership with Appalachian State University and Google. Each and every year I have been impressed by the effort and passion our students put into their cars. Some years we have had teams take 1st Place and others we have finishers in the top 3, but at the end of each event, no matter what place they finish, every team has a huge smile on their face that comes from the sense of accomplishment in competing with a car that they built with their own effort. I look forward to the years to come!"
