Why should students in the Appalachian region consider going to college?
Whatever your dreams are for your future, it will never hurt to continue to learn and grow. Whether you choose a vocational school, community college, 4-year university, art school, or any other institution of higher education, know that the pursuit of knowledge will always help better yourself and your understanding of the world. In short, higher education exposes you to endless amounts of ideas, perspectives, identities, and experiences that will help you see the world in much more nuanced ways.
What is one piece of advice you would offer a middle or high school student?
Do not be afraid of change. Just because something is unfamiliar to you does not mean that it is inherently bad or wrong, it is just different. It is important for you to honor your experiences and point of views, but you should use critical thinking skills to make decisions that might be outside of your comfort zone but that you know will benefit you in the long run.
