What clubs, sports or experiences were you involved in during college?
I was involved in Outdoor Programs at Appalachian State University. I was an adventure guide for other students, including: climbing, ropes course, caving, freshman seminar group interaction courses, kayaking, backpacking and mountaineering. I gained skills and made life-long friends through my adventures in the Grand Tetons of Wyoming.
I started as a Biology major and changed to Experiential Education because of my love for the outdoors. I also worked at the post office on campus and food service. Jobs on campus are a great resource for students during their college experience. I relied on this additional income and also the Pell Grant to support me through my college experience. I was a member of the LGBTQ club on campus and found support and strength through this organization. Being in college was the first time that I felt like I could be me and decide who I would become.
Why should students in the Appalachian region consider going to college?
Going to college will increase your opportunities: opportunities for learning, friends, job skills, and fun! Going to college allows you to have experiences of a lifetime and you never know, you may end up working for your university/college after you graduate! College is a unique environment to learn more about yourself, discover your passions, and create your future.
What is one piece of advice you might be able to offer a middle or high school student?
Be yourself, no matter how awkward you think you are. Your friends will find you and you will find them, be your true self and not someone fake to please others. Surround yourself with people who inspire you and make you laugh. Don’t be afraid to have new experiences and speak your truth. Find your passion and follow it, you never know where it may lead! Be nice and practice mindfulness, relationships will often be your guide to the next step.
